Curonian Spit Coastal Dunes Landscape: Climate Driven Change Calls for the Management Optimization

چکیده
On the Curonian Spit, leading conservation issue is an opposition between two contrasting nature-management principles—anthropocentricity and biocentricity. Land managers still waver options, worst-case scenario materializes as a rapid proliferation of vegetation to accumulative sandplain (palve). It results in decline sand drift mobile dunes. This article aims examine how climate change affects coastal dune landscape identify current protection management priorities. The analysis hydroclimatic changes; succession patterns forest, herbaceous, open-sand ecosystems; phenological-based evaluation (NDVI from MODIS, 2000–2020), influencing possible directions, were carried out this study. show significant hydro-climatic changes (air temperature, precipitation, sea level) occurring over last thirty years. They influence prevailing overgrowth trends recent decades, especially herbaceous ecosystems. Therefore, if EU’s priority habitat—open-sand ecosystems—is be preserved, main policy recommendation apply adequate tools such grazing, pay more attention aesthetic ecosystem services dunes parallel biodiversity conservation.

متن کاملThe fauna and seasonal activity of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in the Curonian Spit (Russia, Lithuania)
The Curonian Spit, characterized by the highest drifting sand dunes in Europe, is a 98 km long, thin, curved sand dune peninsula located in the East of the Baltic Sea. The northern stretch of the Spit belongs to Lithuania, while the rest is part of Russia. Investigations on birds and on bird haemosporidian parasites are carried on in this region. Bloodsucking dipterous insects are specific vect...

متن کاملProjected Scenarios for Coastal First Nations’ Fisheries Catch Potential under Climate Change: Management Challenges and Opportunities
Studies have demonstrated ways in which climate-related shifts in the distributions and relative abundances of marine species are expected to alter the dynamics and catch potential of global fisheries. While these studies assess impacts on large-scale commercial fisheries, few efforts have been made to quantitatively project impacts on small-scale subsistence and commercial fisheries that are e...
